In harmony with nature

Sustainability is very important to us, especially in view of our alpine, nature-loving location. This is not about empty words or even marketing platitudes. It’s not about pointing the finger or making sacrifices that reduce quality of life. It is about genuine appreciation for our beautiful living environment, about contemporary mindfulness towards our precious nature, about meaningful responsibility for ourselves and future generations. It is about consciously perceiving the world around us, preserving it and improving it with modern knowledge. Instead of big, unattainable goals, we focus on small steps and gestures. And if everyone contributes a small part, a big movement will emerge. We want to provide the impetus here and there, inspire our guests, create awareness and thus make our contribution.

In terms of sustainability, we already made conscious decisions when building the Hotel SEPP:

The hotel is built with concrete formwork blocks in a construction method that is conducive to the indoor climate, which saves on air conditioning systems and excessive heating. By the way: if you simply open the window in summer instead of the humming, unhealthy and environmentally harmful air conditioning, you will feel the soothing mountain air caressing your skin with a gently refreshing breeze.

Only reclaimed wood was used in the façade design, meaning that used wood was recycled, which is very much in the spirit of material conservation and sustainability. And on top of that, upcycling elements also look really cool!

The hotel is heated with wood chips – another particularly sustainable modern solution, as this wood waste provides valuable energy.

We don’t have minibars in the rooms, as they are huge energy guzzlers and need to be replaced every 5 years or so, while the refrigerants and technology are extremely harmful to the environment when the appliances are disposed of. We don’t want to be responsible for this “environmental sin” Incidentally, a minibar consumes an average of around 152 kg of CO2 per year. With 40 rooms, we save over 6,000 kg of CO2 per year without a minibar. What’s more, it’s so nice to meet up with nice people for a drink in the SEPP attic. And if you get thirsty in your room, you can simply tap a glass of fresh, delicious mountain spring water, which comes straight from our tap.

We no longer automatically put our plastic-wrapped slippers with rubber soles and a high plastic content in our rooms. If the hotel slippers are even taken out of the bag “just to look at”, we as a hotel have to dispose of them directly for hygiene reasons. This produces huge amounts of waste per hotel, which we find irresponsible. Many guests have their own slippers with them anyway. That’s why we only give our guests slippers on express request.

We also avoid individual plastic packaging such as portioned butter etc. for reasons of sustainability. That’s why we serve delicious jam, honey, butter etc. at the buffet for self-portioning. Sausage and cheese are always freshly sliced in small quantities for the brunch buffet. This way we avoid wasting food right from breakfast.

When buying food, we pay attention to regional products. Bread is brought from the bakery in Maria Alm, eggs from local farmers, sausage, meat and cheese from regional suppliers wherever possible. Of course, this is not possible with all foods, but if we can save on delivery routes and thus reduce the impact on the environment, we do it. Besides, local products are so delicious anyway! We even grow our own herbs seasonally and then use them in the kitchen.

In the public areas of the hotel and in the rooms, we have used many natural materials and have avoided using sealing varnishes and waxes. For example, the wooden floors and walls are completely untreated. It looks rustic anyway!

We have refillable soap dispensers in the rooms to avoid small packaging units. We also deliberately avoid using “amenities” such as individually wrapped cotton pads, nail files etc. in the rooms in order to avoid unnecessary waste. Of course, we keep a small supply available at reception in case a guest needs it.

For guest transfers and deliveries, we rely on e-mobility from Greenstorm and therefore have two electric vehicles to avoid both exhaust and noise emissions. We move between our two hotels either “on foot” or with our environmentally friendly “TreeCycle”, which we can use to shuttle guests and also make smaller deliveries between the hotels.

We have installed wall boxes from the www.freiesolarroute.at/solarro… for guests with electric vehicles and the hotel’s own electric cars. There are also Tesla electric charging stations in our hotels.

The tap water in the hotel comes directly from the springs in the surrounding mountains. This means we can drink the water straight from the tap, so to speak. We therefore provide a self-fill water bottle in the rooms to avoid wasting disposable bottles.

When it comes to avoiding mountains of laundry, we appeal to our guests to reuse towels, bath and sauna towels. Just like at home. Because Hotel SEPP is just one of around 185,000 hotels worldwide where towels are washed every day. Each wash cycle involves enormous water consumption, environmentally harmful detergent consumption, CO2-emitting electricity consumption and therefore a significant negative impact on the environment and climate. Imagine this figuratively: Around 3 towels from 17 million hotel rooms worldwide are washed every day!!! Every single guest who uses their towel several times contributes to reducing the huge mountains of laundry in hotels. Every towel counts, because even small steps make a big difference – true to the motto “Think big. Act small.”

Appreciation towards our employees is of course also a key sustainability factor for us, because we trust each other, rely on each other, inspire each other and, ideally, the spark spreads and inspires our guests!

Casual design with upcycling elements, fresh mountain air, nice people, a large bar instead of a mini-bar, fresh air instead of air conditioning, delicious mountain spring water – sustainability is fun!
